Nuclear Futures Fellowship

Equipping Leaders with Cutting-Edge Foresight Tools to Anticipate and Advance New Nuclear Risk Reduction and Disarmament Strategies

The Fellowship

Horizon 2045 is proud to collaborate with Ploughshares on the Nuclear Futures Fellowship, a cohort-based program for emerging and established nuclear leaders designed to enhance long-term thinking, systems knowledge, and cross-issue awareness in the field. Nuclear Futures Fellows, who come from think tanks, academia, and frontline communities, engage in a sophisticated foresight methodology that moves from horizon scanning through scenario development to the creation of comprehensive monitoring dashboards. Our aim throughout is to deepen understanding of ways the nuclear threat landscape is likely to evolve over time.

The Method

Core to the fellowship are the Horizon 2045 Nuclear System Map and Foresight Radar, our interactive tool for exploring pivotal issues and drivers of change shaping human and planetary security.

Fellows explore combinatorial and cascading effects and complex interactions rather than single-factor or linear projections, providing the foundation for plausible future scenarios that describe the ways in which security paradigms—and, by extension, strategies for advancing nuclear risk reduction goals—might transform over the 10–15 years. They learn to distinguish between leading indicators of change, lagging indicators, weak signals, and conflicting signals, creating what fellows describe as “actionable intelligence that can inform strategic decisions about where to focus efforts and resources.”
