Women Are Redefining Global Security at the Intersections

The Challenge

The convergence of existential threats requires leaders who can build authentic relationships while seeking to understand the root causes of complex problems, understand the inseparability of means and ends, and reliably create the conditions for new possibilities to emerge. Evidence increasingly shows that women's leadership and feminist principles are particularly effective for these purposes. Yet women remain dramatically underrepresented in security decision-making.

That’s why we’re backing a network of international women leaders to transform how we approach global security challenges.

  • From protecting state interests to safeguarding humans and the planet

  • From militarizing humanity to humanizing security

  • From nuclear deterrence to cooperative problem-solving

The Network

Together with members of The Elders—Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Helen Clark, two-time Prime Minister of New Zealand—Horizon 2045 and Ploughshares are hosting Women Transforming Global Security (WTGS). It is dedicated to reducing security threats at the intersection of nuclear weapons, climate change, emerging technologies, public health and human rights. Our three organizations share a conviction that our most pressing global challenges demand fundamentally new approaches to security—approaches that prioritize human wellbeing, planetary health, and long-term thinking over traditional power dynamics.
